If you are planning a road trip visit to a comic convention, you want to get your accommodations sorted as soon as possible. Finding a great place to stay can let you get to the venue early, and make the most of the time at the conference. Here are some ways to find awesome accommodations in your budget.
Motels and hotels
Often times, comic conferences will contact the large hotel and motel chains around their location and organise discount codes so hotels and motels can be more affordable than you expect. If you are extra lucky, some of the conference attendees may also be staying in the hotel, meaning you can often catch glimpses of the stars in the restaurants and bars before and after the conference, which can be fun. If you have decided to attend in full costume, it will be easier to maintain costumes and makeup for a shorter walk to the conference, and you can line up earlier to get great spots for the headline talks.
Self contained apartments
Self contained apartments are often close to venues as well. If you are travelling with friends, you can split the cost of the apartment and can cook some meals at home, which can keep the cost down. The shared living space also gives you a chance to hang out together and swap your tales from the conference!
Staying at a dorm is usually a quite cheap option, and you can often meet other single travelers. On the other hand, it can be easily overwhelming after a busy day at a conference to come back and sleep in a room of strangers, so if you are a more introverted type, this is not the best option.
Crashing on a friend's couch
You might know people either through fan clubs or other relationships. However, while it's technically free to stay with friends, by the time you take them out to dinner or by a nice thank you gift for your host, it can often work out as costing a similar amount to other cheap forms of accommodation.
As you can see, no matter what your budget, you can find some great accommodation options. The best accommodation for you depends not only on your personal budget, but also on the size of the party you are travelling and everyone's personal preferences for down time and interaction with other people over the comic conference duration.
